A Memorable Assignment | Hiro didn’t like school. It was a waste of time, to his opinion. More than half of what they thought you would be of no use to you in the future anyway. Was it really useful to know how to calculate a triangle’s hypotenuse or what the capital of Spain was? To him, not at all. But it was nearly impossible to get decent jobs without at least a high school degree. And he knew he was basically a functional illiterate. That, at the very least, needed to be fixed. It was why he chose to return to school. They offered classes for adults who wanted to finish high school. He had been given some assignments to do. He waited until the last minute to do them. He hated those writing essays. He never knew what to write. And he kept making grammatical errors. But he had finished the few questions for his mathematics assignment and was now up to it. He chose to do his work in the park because he couldn’t stay locked indoors. He had all the materials, in other words paper, a pencil and an eraser. The teacher had asked them to write about something that happened in their life and Hiro had no idea what to go for. He didn’t like speaking of himself and apparently wasn’t so keen on writing about himself either. Normally, he wouldn’t bother talking to people, but he felt it might be necessary here. “What’s the most memorable that ever happened in your life?” he asked the first person he got close to. If he had to answer that himself, he wouldn’t even know. Had anything memorable ever happened to him anyway? |
